sights in the city
- PTUJ CASTLE
Visit one of the most magnificent castles in Slovenia, which is home to impressive exhibitions of the Ptuj-Ormož Regional Museum: from instruments and arms, to traditional masks and striking tapestries. The Ptuj Castle also offers a picture-perfect view over the tiled roofs and cobbled streets of the oldest Slovenian city.
- SLOVENSKI TRG
This charming square is full of city attractions – from a 5-meter 2nd-century Roman monument, and the magnificent city tower with the onion dome, to the gorgeous theater building, lovely St. George’s Church and the oldest open-air lapidarium in the country.
- MESTNI TRG
Take a break and sit down in Mestni trg (Town Square), surrounded by beautiful buildings, dominated by the Town Hall from the early 20th century. There is also a statue of St. Florian to protect the city from fires.
The best time and place to see this mystical creature and most prominent local carnival character is Kurentovanje, however if you miss the carnival, you can always check the Kurent room or the collection of traditional carnival masks at the Ptuj Castle.
On Muzejski trg you can find the Dominican Monastery with a small park offering a beautiful view of the Drava River, while on Minoritski trg you can pop in the Minorite Monastery with a gorgeous arcaded courtyard.
Five magnificent shrines to the god Mithras have been discovered in Ptuj. You can see the foundation, altars, reliefs and cult imagery in the remnants of Mithraeum III, an ancient Roman shrine from the 3rd century.
